Is Your Firm Ready to Implement CRM?

I was at an event the other day with law firm marketing folks and after talking about the snow that was falling outside the window, the conversation turned to an even more depressing topic: Client Relationship Management (CRM). How does one successfully implement a CRM system in a law firm? None of us had an answer. I know we tried to do this at the firm I was working at and after two years, we still had not achieved lift off and were ready to scrap the project.

So I decided to do a little research and found this oldie but goodie Law Practice magazine article from 2008 that provides a sobering assessment of what needs to be done before undertaking CRM within a law firm. Bottom line: it’s not about the technology. It’s about the mindset. So before you start shopping for a CRM system for your firm, consider the words of Ross Fishman from this article:

“In firms where the lawyers like to own their clients and keep them portable, there will be serious reluctance to share this information, and any attempt at CRM will fail, which can be a costly, time-consuming debacle.”

Getting Attorneys to Write Like “Prose” for Visibility
Attorneys are trained to write. And yes, they do a lot of writing in their profession. However, translating their trained style of writing for client and general audiences can lead to frustrated journalists and/or bored readers. This presentation discusses the educational process of turning their vast knowledge into marketable material for prospects through a variety of media. This presentation will teach you how to approach the “personalities” in your firm, expectations of editors, the importance of conversational “voice,” as well as the art of interviewing, leveraging content for multiple purposes and showing measurable results — results that get attorneys to buy into “marketing” their expertise in written form.

About the presenter:

Christine Nelson is a journalist and holds a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications. She has two decades of professional writing experience for top business media, communities and professionals. Leading Ingenuity’s public relations team, Christine works with clients to develop credible content, media opportunities and other strategies to get you in front of the right audiences – increasing your visibility and influence. She is known as a fierce achiever who wants to get you results.

Are you wondering how to make your attorneys seem more exciting online?

If you are, too bad: you’re asking the wrong question.

So says a book recommended to us by LMA-MN member Mary Hirsch of Schwegman Lundberg & Woessner. According to Youtility: Why Smart Marketing is about Help Not Hype by Jay Baer, to win attention these days, you must ask a different question: “How can we help?” The book is chocked full of examples of companies who are practicing “Youtility” by using information and helpfulness to transform relationships with customers.

Thanks, Mary, for practicing Youtility in recommending this book!
